The million Quarter Homepage - What is it about?

Hey Internet! By the time this website here is public its been exactly 20 years since "The million dollar homepage" went up. In case you're not familiar with it, it's a website conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew to raise money for his university education. The homepage consisted of one million pixels arranged in a 1000 × 1000 pixel grid; the image-based links on it were sold for $1 per pixel in 10 × 10 blocks.

This website is also a kind of fundraiser which essentially follows the same rules - Selling Ads per Pixel! You send me a link and a picture of your choice, tailored to the amount of pixels you bought and I will feature it on here! My brother and I work in the kitchen. However, things aren't going so well right now. Besides loans and family (which are both equally thin on ice), I sometimes thought about other ways to raise money that lets us continue to work in our field of passion. Maybe a simple Business would help. For this, the internet was a tremendous opportunity that hadn't existed for many generations before.

The internet in general is a crazy thing. I grew up when every friend had a family computer, your siblings had their own laptop, and life was impossible without a Lan cable. On weekends, my parents didn't set any time limits on the computer, and Flash games and YouTube were my thing. But also the strange websites on the internet. As a child, you followed every link that promised to be funny. You stumbled upon pages whose magnitude you didn't understand as a child but still fascinated you. Mr Wong's "The World's Tallest Virtual Building" and "The Smallest Website in the World" were some of the classics of the old days. Among such projects, of course, was Alex Tew's "The Million Dollar Homepage". I didn't realize at the time that it was actually a kind of fundraiser. But it was so creative that its lasting impact overshadowed Alex's original reason for the website. For me at least it was just fun to click on things.

After all, projects, especially new ones like r/place, are things that bring people together and make a lasting impression. So, I thought: Instead of being one of many people asking the world's population for support... why not take advantage of this opportunity and put in some work to create something awesome? Im not terminally Ill and the mafia isnt after me. its simply A Homage To the-million-dollar-homepage's Idea to fund someones passion.

~Wasn't it a million Pixel each for a Dollar?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Well yeah, but I dont need a million bucks (Haha). Of course this should generate money but It also should be a little more inviting for people. A 10x10 px Ad would sell for $100. A bit high a price if you ask me 🙂 But for a quarter, it would only be $25 and this might be more inviting for people to participate! I mean we are talking about owning a piece of the internet here, am i right guys? hehe

~What do you need money for?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sandwich and bills... so many bills... jokes aside, We do in fact need to pay bills and debts. Of course I hope I can pay them myself again, once Business is up again! its just barely enough now but some days simply gave me the shivers. And dont forget that sandwich!

~Why should I pay you to publish an Ad?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thats the great thing! You dont need to pay me anything! This is supposed to be a not-so-boring funding for my passion, combined with an art project. You can buy a spot to adverstise yourself, to support me or to just simply throw yourself into nostalgia! Everyone is welcome to participate and buy an adverstisement spot on here for whatever reason. Or not! the choice is yours :]

~What is this passion of yours you are talking about?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I love to cook! My Brother and me. We grew up cooking and sharing the fun of it together. So obviously cooking and serving people food became a great pleasure for me. Its what we do best and what we like the most. We even work together now. Unfortunately if it doesnt happen to be some highend restaurant, usually its not a well paid profession. Bills stack up faster than we can pay them with our job. Frankly Business is not doing well, hours become scarce- Because of that, it is at stake whether we are able to continue cooking. I dont wanna give up doing that.

~I dont have that much money, can I still participate in it?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Actually? yeah, you can! I have reserved some pixel for some cool projects I think would fit on here. So if ya have no money for this but a cool idea going on that you want me to link at, shoot me an email. I sort em out and it may get featured on here for free!

~How long will this website be up?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Until I die... or when the servers explode, whatever happens first.
